Fava Beans

Well, it can be done, but I'm not sure how practical it is. I planted fava bean seed in October, nursed them through our mild southern Arkansas winter, occasionally wrapped in plastic and occasionally supported by a heat lamp during cold snaps. I just ate a delicious plate of new beans raw with a little olive oil and salt. But, let's face it, it took six months of pampering! The blossoms are very pretty; I'd never grown this plant before. But they did go through a good many below freezing nights.

arkbirdlady - you might want to go on over to the Beans, Peas and Legumes Forum which has several posts on favas. This forum is pretty moribund.

I don't think the pampering was absolutely necessary since I do the same in my climate and they withstand frost very well. I just sow and forget until the spring.

Here is a link that might be useful: Beans, Peas and Legumes Forum
