My morning Glory

Ok so this is the first time I Have planted Morning glory..

I planted the big blue flowering one. The flowers are very pretty but only bloom once before they die off (or should I say dissapear?). Is this normal?

I have a few questions..

I have 4 plants planted to the right and in the very front I have 5 or 6. I want it to become thicker covering..Did I not plant enough or does it just take time?

Is there some kind of pruning I can do to help thicken it up and produce more flowers??

Right now I am only getting 1 maybe 2 flowers a day, then they are gone.

Im also having a leaf problem. A few weeks ago I laid pine straw down at their base because I was going away on vaca and had no one to water my plants so I hoped it would hold enough moister to survive the week.I dont know if this is causing this problem..

Any information can help!!!

The foliage could have mites which are problematic in dry hot weather. Take a magnifying glass and look at the leaf reverse for tiny mites.
Morning glories typically close their flowers by afternoon. That's why some gardeners like the variegated foliage forms. You could cut back some of the stems to make them branch. Try one first to see the results.

I have a Morning Glory and have not got the discoloration in the leaves. I am not quite sure what that is. I would have to say if I had to guess I would guess what was written above about the mites. Mine blooms in the evening so its kinda hard to take a pic that is nice and bright. When the day is here, the petals have curled in and shriveled up. That is normal. That is what they do. Remember that morning glories do not like the soil to be too fertile. They will not produce a lot of flowers if the soil is too fertile. I have white morning glory that has grown a huge amount in the past month. I have to cut some back. Are you up for trading? I can get you some cuttings or rooted runners from mine if you trade with me something close to whats on my want list. Just let me know..

The Morning Glories at the Japanese asagao shows always have fantastic flowers...
